Aspartame vs. Sugar, which is worse?

Do people judge you for drinking diet coke?Or do you judge others? It happens to me, all the time! I’ll be hanging out with a group of people who are all drinking beer and smoking cigarettes. I pop open a diet coke and someone says, “you know those aren’t very healthy”. OR “you know, drinking diet coke doesn’t make you skinny”. – Yeah, I know both of these things, (so do most people) why do people find it necessary to tell me?

Alright, so let’s tackle these comments. I am drinking a coke, they are having a beer. For some reason, they feel the need to comment on my choice of beverage. That is probably just deflection, right? I mean, isn’t that mindfulness 101? The judgments people make about you say far more about the person doing the judging than the person being judged.

Still, how unhealthy is the aspartame in diet coke? I know many would claim that it actually makes you fat. I did a little research and one article cited this resource when they made that exact statement. I am guessing the author assumed most would not actually check their sources. When I did, I learned that studies showed only a “modest” increase in a body mass index (BMI). Some of these trials. were done over the course of 15 years! The very moderate increase in BMI could have had nothing to do with how much aspartame someone consumed. There are MANY things that could cause a person to gain a few pounds in a decade, including age. In short the article says, diet coke won’t help with weight management and further research needs to be done”.

So no, drinking diet coke or other drinks that use aspartame alone will not have any affect on your waistline but common sense should tell you that. The diet industry is always trying to over complicate weight-loss and weight gain. It really is about calories in and calories out- that’s it.

What about aspartame and other fake sugars causing cancer? I had certainly heard that one before! So, I did some more research and learned from this article that there is no evidence to date that sugar substitutes cause cancer. In fact, I have recently learned that cancer actually needs sugar to grow! I purchased and read this book called, “How to stop cancer fast” and spoke with a Naturopath. Both confirmed that consuming aspartame instead of sugar could actually be part of the cure for cancer!

So, sugar substitutes most likely do not make you fat and do not cause cancer. However, they are unnatural and for that reason, they are probably not a great thing to be putting into your body. Everything in moderation though, right?

When it comes to dieting, I recommend choosing sugar substitutes over regular sugar any day. There is a ridiculous amount of information out there about how bad sugar is for you! There is no denying cutting back will make you healthier and happier… seriously!

***I’M BACK! look for future posts from me about how cutting back on sugar can stop cancer growth and how horrible sugar is for both your mind and body!
