Meet Lauren
Hey there, I'm Lauren and the creator and founder of Mindfulness as Medicine. I'm also the person you will meet with for your private session so let me tell you a little bit about how I got started with all of this!
I have always been fascinated by the mind. I started taking psychology classes in high school and then college just for fun. As I got older I struggled more and more with anxiety and my weight. I was striving to be the perfect size while masking my unhappiness with alcohol and food. Oddly, I couldn’t see why I wasn’t succeeding.
As time went on, I had traveled all over the world, met all kinds of people but I was still unhappy and felt extremely unfulfilled. I decided to go back to grad school to pursue a career in therapy. In my travels I learned that I seemed to have a knack for talking to and understanding others, I liked it too. With school I hoped to figure myself out while learning to really help others.
Unfortunately, grad school was a waste of time, a scam even. I was learning how to make money but not help others. One day I raised my hand and asked, “when am I going to learn how to actually help people?” My professor told me that one day a modality would just click for me. She was right but that wouldn’t happen in grad school and it wouldn’t for a long time.
I needed to go through a series of struggles before I would find answers. My mom became sick and nearly died from drinking too much alcohol. My dad also struggled with addiction years before and my brother as well.
Then, my sister passed away at the age of 38 from her own issues with weight and an alcohol addiction. Six month later, my brother in law passed away from his addiction. This was my husband’s younger brother and second that he lost to mental illness. His older brother chose to take his own life years before we met.
I dropped out of school, it seemed pointless anyway. I wasn't really learning anything and the loss of my sister was too much for me to take. It seemed everyone including myself was struggling in some way.
I started searching for the answer to how people change but this time with even more vigor. I needed to find the answer to depression, anxiety, addiction, low self-esteem, and stress that seemed to be plaguing our entire society.
One day, a friend invited me to a Bikram yoga class. I have always been up for trying new things so I said why not. I had no idea how much that class would change my life. Something happened to me with the forced meditation that is Bikram yoga. I also broke out in hives from head to toe and had to go to the emergency room! Even still, I left that class feeling better than I had in a long time!
What was this? I went home and began researching why a yoga class might have so much of an effect on my brain. I learned about the mind and body connection and finally mindfulness.
I was blown away that I hadn’t been taught this in any of my psychology classes at high school, undergrad or grad school. Could it be because it actually works? If people were taught something that really helped maybe psychologist, therapist and big pharma wouldn’t make as much money. Maybe, there wouldn’t be such a need for diet and fitness programs that so many people profit from. Maybe, rehab centers would go out of business?
Before really studying mindfulness, I had always thought it was just about “being in the present moment” but there truly is so much more to it. It is about being present physically but also mentally. If we were all taught these concepts in grade school, the world would be a much better place.
It isn’t difficult to learn. We were all once extremely mindful. Just watch a kid at the park, they are the most mindful. We just lose that talent as we grow up. The sad thing is, mindfulness is something rarely offered in school, you have to go looking for it on your own and even then, there are so many different online mindfulness courses that teach you very little. It is hard to find one that is truly helpful.
This is why I created Mindfulness as Medicine. My programs are the absolute best way to learn mindfulness. Each program is tailored to help you get to the root cause of any addiction. Whether your drug of choice is alcohol, food, video games, porn, work, or the treadmill. This program will help you to get to the real issues so you don’t simply swap one addiction for another.
I absolutely LOVE working with people! This is truly my calling and I couldn’t be happier that I get do what I love. This is why I have chosen to make my program so affordable! I am not out to simply make money like most therapist or pharmaceutical companies. I finally found what truly creates change and I want to share it with the world.
I truly believe if my sister had this program she would still be alive today. What is the price of saving a life? You can’t put a price tag on it but if you did, I am sure it would be more than $150!
